To me , drawing is the quintessence of art. The ability of an artist to compose his
creations without the mask and make-up of colour, depends on his mastery of
draughtsmanship. I believe that drawing makes no allowances for ignorance. Though
one may offer “ abstraction” or “ modernity” as an excuse, it is always there, even in
the most avant – gerde art, to indicate whether one has learned to paint, before starting to “ unpaint ”.
My relation therefore, with that vast chapter of painting called drawing, since my
paintings are usually compositions of large dimensions, is self evident. The drawing,
the pencil, holds a position of prime importance in my work and in my heart, as it
constitutes an indispensable condition, the basis for the whole structure of my work.
